The Death Of Rave hits its 10th release with a dream collaborative release from two of the most relevant names in future facing ‘dance’ music; Sheffield based, SND veteran Mark Fell and Budapest sound artist Gábor Lázár. On The Neurobiology of Moral Decision Making, the duo deliver 10 pieces of off the grid, unsyncopated mastery, deconstructing of the steadfast preconceptions of dance music through a suite of constantly shifting time signatures, sporadic claps and sterile, modernistic melody. Such production methods obliterate the deeply rooted notions of rhythm, ushering in a new age of dance floor exploration. Each piece is untitled, and shifts from bursts of sonic spasm (‘1’,‘6’) to more fully realised extrapolations of their off-kilter methods (‘3’, ‘4’) where we’re able to appreciate the subtle rhythmic morphs on a greater time plane. All of this builds to the 12 minute plus closing tenth piece, where the duo let loose on a mind-bending jaunt of rhythmic and sonic convulsions, fully exhibiting the possibilities and potential of Max/MSP technology.

Former Emeralds synth-gazer Steve Hauschildt returns to Chicago institution Kranky (following a collection on Editions Mego in 2013) for his first solo material in three years. Kranky tells the tale of Where All Is Fled thus, ““surrealist landscape paintings, early alchemical emblems, and recurring visions… which reveal themselves after repeated listens and blur together notions of artificial and natural sound”. The organic and the electronic are at play here as Hasuchildt carefully combines echo-laden piano with swirling Juno patterns on the title track, while advancing the arpeggiated sounds of Cluster, Schnitzler et. al with processed crowd sounds and live orchestral instrumentation. Expertly crafted developments from the future.

An GRM release from the electroacoustic composer Michel Redolfi. Both pieces on this release were composed using the first digital synthesizer: the Synclavier, and highlight Redolfi’s interest in investigating the process of listening. Created purely from electronics, these two interesting long-form pieces of experimental electronics includes ‘Pacific Tubular Waves’ (1979) - inspired by the oceanic horizons of San Diego and created a year before Redolfi started his research into underwater sounds, and ‘Immersion’ (1980) a track which attempts to sonically document the sounds of the Pacific Ocean.

Following major releases for Type, NNA Tapes, and a constant stream of cassette releases under a bewildering number of aliases, US underground wunderkind Jeff Witscher arrives on Bill Kouligas’ unstoppable PAN label with full-length ‘Vanilla Call Option’. The 11 tracks collected here approach themes of travel and boredom via the traditions of musique concrete and computer music. Hell has stripped his work of its previous classical sensuousness, bringing its glitch surface to the fore in a sound which recalls the likes of Florian Hecker, Peter Rehberg, or a more generous Alva Noto. The album impresses most though when more luxurious elements briefly appear: ‘Var_Len’ adds angel synth voices to the laptop scree, and ‘Merci Cheri’ is a gorgeous distant chorale which adds crucial variety.

Long awaited vinyl outing of 2010’s Psychic Driving Tapes by Aaron Dilloway, founding member of the Detroit noise group Wolf Eyes and Hanson Records boss, at the hands of Will Bankhead’s The Trilogy Tapes. Originally released on Medusa, the record references a CIA procedure in which psychiatric patients were subjected to a continuously repeated audio message on a looped tape, in order to change their behaviour. The two long form compositions of warped and manipulated tape sounds have been slightly altered for the vinyl version, and are intended to be played at any desired speed.

Christelle Gualdi AKA Stellar OM Source returns to New York based RVNG Intl. with Nite-Glo. Recorded solely using live hardware of a mobile studio set-up during a time of loss and emotional processing, this four-track EP continues her off-script journey from Conservatoire de Paris student to DIY synth scenester to the DIY synth scene of the mid-aughts to a global dancefloor.
