Glacial Sound debut colder-than-cold (Eski!) producer Sharp Veins with a six tracker of new age grime escapism. Cutting into the first side strong with Inbox Island, bubbling arpeggios build in anticipation while the backdrop paints a vast sci-fi landscape in a similar vein to Kuedo's imagined soundtracks before things go deep with the future Boxed anthem Water Logged which dives into sounds of a slow steppers angle with added piano licks throughout. Closing the first side is 2 Bad so Sad, a rough grime-coated trap number while side 2 starts with Missing Sun stacking a tense atmosphere with more of that early DMZ bass weight while Tanzawa II fully strips back to an early 00's grime skeleton before rounding off with the mnml RNB slide of The Seeing Palm. Killer wares from this one-to-watch producer and a massive recommendation for anyone into the early morning Mr. Mitch or the club-focused Tri Angles.

With the title track appearing in Elijah and Skilliam’s Fabric mix, Into Mist works as the perfect epitome of Murlo’s manifesto. Grime blueprints decorated with dancehall percussion and dilated synth patterns. Vertigo for example isn’t exactly the kind of grime instrumental one might imagine Skepta or Fekky jumping on because of it’s more left field inclination. Bassline-esque vocal samples with winding elasticated melodies that make way for an 808 pounding that fits right in with the Rinse back catalogue. Flagging up the spirit of UK grime throughout, Murlo triumphs by experimenting and bending classic prototypes into newer and more intriguing models.

12 months after he unleashed his debut full-length for Keysound, master-producer Wen drops this EP for Tectonic and showcases some of his finest and most detailed work to date. Opening with the gloomy but floor-ready monochrome syncopations of Backdraft, Wen ups the ante the title track and comes through with a 5-minute subsurface workout which maintains the overarching aesthetic of shadiness. This murky direction is kept up on closer Ghost where a fragmented beat swirls in and out of motion.

Following two dub-infused EPs , Dutch producer Krampfhaft releases his debut album on local label Rwina Records. Obscure sci-fi sounds distinguish his style which spans everything from instrumental hip hop to electronica. Sawing synths and screaming effects break out in a shadowy dubstep direction in ‘Superfluid’. Clicks and space-like keyboard sounds diffuse a cold atmosphere against the reverberant bass drums in ‘Clip Point’. With the looping in ‘Extrasolar’ and ‘Deleted Alternate Scenes’, his hip hop influences become more apparent. It is these dense structures that make Before We Leave stand out as Kramphaft’s most complex work to date.

Following some good radio play last year, Suicideyear(aka James Prudhomme) has gone from relative obscurity to hooking up with Young Money and carving out a name for himself with a handful of distinctive mixtapes. One of three getting a re-release on Software Recordings, Japan was Suicideyear’s debut full length, and finds the young Baton Rouge producer in typically introverted, melancholy form. Tracks like ‘Hate In My Heart’ and ‘Kuuuuush’ are full of menacing hip-hop swagger, but Prudhomme somehow manages to tease out their sensitive sides – it’s emotive music with a tough, bass heavy heart.

London’s Sampha breaks free of Canadian recording artist Drake to provide his own, solo rendition of 'Too Much' which was sampled and released under the same name on Drake's 2013 LP ‘Nothing Was the Same’. Whilst emotions ran high on Drake’s version, Sampha’s minimalistic solo effort tugs at the heartstrings a little harder, with vocals pulled from the soul beautifully integrated into soft piano keys. The B-side offers 'Happens', an original solo piece again demonstrating the simple but effective pairing of voice and piano.

Following up his excellent Maze Temple EP, UK producer Bloom rolls out the assembly floor vibrations once again for a debut release on Bristolian club night-cum-label venture Crazy Legs. Up first, ‘Cold Grip’ is a hard-hitting configuration of dystopian rhythm, littered with bruising clangs and piston pumping sonics, followed by the similarly uncompromising ‘The Menagerie’. Next, ‘Dark Light’ lets a warm sub-bass undercurrent run through, never quite settling with its erratic percussion running wild whereas the final cut ‘Vessel’ is another sparse concoction of brutal, aural mechanics.

New York's Tri Angle label continues to pluck its artists from the British Isles, the latest coming in the shape of the mysterious young producer Boothroyd. 'NYC' is a clattering racket of sounds, stringy synth lines offset and bolstered by crashing waves of sound and unexpected blasts of noise. Tracks come and go with beats and sounds seemingly unrelated, thickets of noise and blasts of sonic intrigue abounding, twisted groans lending terror and despair to the release's bizarre sound board. We only know a bit about this young producer, but on the basis of this release he's certainly got our attention.

As part of the Yamaguchi Center For Arts And Media’s 10th birthday in 2013, Japanese experimentalist Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tokoyo-based duo Illuha and 12k label boss Taylor Deupree put together this performance. This unique meeting of the minds was wholly improvised and consisted of guitars, synthesisers and organs all pieced together to represent the “eternal and ageless quality” of music. Divided into 3 stunning chapters, Perpetual is an ambient masterpiece where unique minds find harmony and order without language or forethought.
