Kim Gordon has watched very closely where the spirit of punk has moved over the decades and morphed accordingly on her second solo album The Collective, folding bass-worshipping trap rhythms into her overdriven guitar palettes. As she says on ‘Shelf Warmer’, this one’s “no fluff”, all throttle: heaving industrial noise metred by lo-fi cloud rap instrumentals turn soporific and apocalyptic, decorated with grinding metal, asymmetrical lasering rhythms, and snatches of ethereal audio rising up from the rubble. ‘BYE BYE’ captures it all with Gordon’s steely staccato rap listing over a maelstrom of discordant guitars, blown out drums, and a serrated trap beat.
