Dylan Beale (half of jungle duo Rude & Deadly) may have missed the inception of grime by half a decade, but his 1994 SNES soundtrack for Wolverine: Adamantium Rage hits all the marks. Sneaker Social Club present the soundtrack’s very first release, and it’s a veritable feast of bangers in its own right, fusing Beale’s techno and jungle influences with West Coast hip hop and the broken beats of UK garage and forming a kind of proto-grime only some years ahead of its time. In fact, this would come full circle around 2016, when standout banger ‘Tri-fusion’ was noticed by London-based producer Sir Pixalot and utilised as the basis for a slice of Eski beat coldness when combined with with a vocal from J-Wing. The equally sublow ready high pitched bleeps, molten bass, and strutting staccato string cuts of ‘Tri Fusion’ are what thrust this gem back into public consciousness, but also check the scratches and distorted synths of the title theme alongside the dancefloor-worthy tension of ‘Destroyer Program’ aptly clawing right through the instrumental action.
