While it’s true that 1997’s Modus Operandi LP casts a large shadow over the Photek story, the following SOLARIS may actually be the more influential collection. Moving beyond the beat science wizardry of MO towards spacier, moodier, and more rhythmically varied pastures, Photek explores deep house, techno, and even trip hop here all while brandishing his signature mathematically precise drums. An altogether warmer and more inviting listen, SOLARIS pointed towards a prescient future of genre fluidity, and this reissue from Proper Records stakes Photek’s claim to having two properly earth-shifting collections under his belt.
