Weekly Roundup: 24th January 2020

Welcome to the Bleep Weekly Roundup, our guide to the best new releases. Our album of the week comes via Trip Records and their new 'locus error' compilation that features artists such as Nina Kraviz, Analemma (SOPHIE & Juliana Huxtable) and PTU. Our EP of the week is the long-awaited return of TNGHT on Warp with their new 8-track 'II' record.

Elsewhere we have the new single from Four Tet featuring Ellie Goulding, a new album by Recondite on Ghostly International, an exciting collaboration between Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens who share their 'Luminous Spaces' track via Domino, precision electro from James Shinra, Doon Kanda's LP on Hyperdub and a lovely 7" by The Mail Coif aka Tapes.

Album of the Week

The latest in a long line of various-artists compilations from TRIP Records, locus error is probably the most complex and intriguing set of productions that the label has released to date. Old-skool trance has become more prominent in the TRIP sound of late and the influence is more keenly felt than ever here. Analemma (aka SOPHIE and Huxtable)’s ‘Plunging Asymptote’ and Alan Backdrop’s ‘Nizaj’ are particularly ravey, transporting the listener back to the 90s with their pounding big-room beats and stabbing synth melodies. locus error’s title-track - delivered here by Carlota - does something similar while softening up the tones to give things a bit more of an IDM-techno flavour.

TNGHT, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice – II

You’ll probably have noticed that TNGHT, the duo formed by Hudson Mohawke and Lunice, have been pretty quiet in recent years. In fact, the duo have been on hiatus since the end of 2013. However, TNGHT have recently kicked back into gear, and after re-emerging earlier in 2019 with single ‘Serpent’ we get the first extended release from Mohawke and Lunice since 2012’s game-changing TNGHT EP.

The eight tracks of II simultaneously pick up where TNGHT left off and also advance their sound in exciting new ways. Those who fell for the group all those years back will be pleased to find that TNGHT don’t skimp on the bass and beats here. Cuts like ‘Club Finger’ and ‘Dollaz’ still feature some fever-dream melodies and drums which clatter through the speakers with the force of a rampaging herd of elephants. There’s still plenty on WAP434 that will tear up a club, warehouse party or festival mainstage.
