Here we have Moodymann up to his usual tricks. Pitch Black City Reunion contains two lengthy house jams of the sort that have become the Mahogani Records boss’s stock-in-trade over the years. It’s unclear whether the title track actually was recorded somewhere in Detroit, or whether the bracketed title is simply scene-setting. Either way, it blooms from a post-bop jazz opening into a smooth-as-silk house shuffle. On the flip, ‘Got Me Coming Back Right Now’ is a notably sexy groove even by Moodymann’s standards. Hovering at around 100 bpm, there’s a certain Gil Scott-Heron vibe to the conga drums and soulful vocals.
