Matt Karmil’s fourth LP, and his first for Smalltown Supersound (Lindstrom, Bjorn Torske), finds the producer come through with another graceful set. One thing that has always distinguished Karmil from his peers who operate in that space where deep house and minimal techno meet is his ability to craft albums with a good sense of ebb and flow. This continues on Will, a record that is just as much about what Karmil takes away from the music as it is what he brings to the table. Try the first two tracks ‘Sharehold’ and ‘Sloshy’. Opener ‘Sharehold’ doesn’t have a drum in sight, instead spinning out a muted and meditative piano loop. When Karmil has allowed you to settle into the record’s polite, cerebral flow, ‘Sloshy’ then morphs the piano loop into an undulating synth pattern and gently pattering drum loop. The grace and ease of the transition recalls Smalltown Supersound’s recent super-minimal LP from Will Long.
