Christian Jay follows up 2016’s Contrail with his second EP for Bristol label Idle Hands (Shanti Celeste, Parris). Much like the previous release, Katalox is characterised by chilled, pleasant two-steps, albeit with an ever-so-slight influence of glitchtronica and modular experimentalism. The title track is a warm, deft track that will work both as club fare and as a soundtrack to pillow-talking. Its polite shuffle recalls the stuff that producers like Mahs and Bonobo were doing in the early 2010s. B-side ‘Del’s Kicks’ slows the two-step down and trails the track in slightly mournful synths. As such, it invokes the trip-hop lineage of Idle Hands’s home city.
