Retro-futurist Neil Scrivin returns to Fonolith for a record of chirpy electro. The sound palette of Geek Upmanship is a pleasing mix of 808s, various synths and electric guitars, and from these tools Scrivin crafts six jams that have a little Super Mario in them as well as, say, Ceephax Acid Crew. Anyone who dug the retromania of Scrivin’s previous drops on Monolith will get a kick from the wacky distorted groove of ‘The Mushroom Stage’ or the bleep test that is ‘Colour Clash’. Elsewhere the interlude ‘Inky Gorgeous’ is a delightful, dreamy guitar piece that obliquely recalls Eric Chenaux. Those buying the physical edition will receive a fetching turquoise-coloured cassette.
