Having previously called R&S and Ninja Tune his label home, Space Dimension Controller now surfaces on Dekmantel for a lengthy EP. Despite the change of scenery, the Northern Irish producer is still creating a similarly retro-futurist brand of house to previous releases. Clocking well over 30 minutes despite being three tracks long, Gaining Time is a testament to SDC’s command of structure and aesthetic. Opener ‘Everything Is Better Now’ ekes itself out from a spoken-word intro to a blip-bloop electro-funk jam. The even longer ‘NRG Intersect’ is a weightless journey into synth ambience pitched somewhere between Vangelis and those guitar-ragas that crop up on Dean Blunt’s LPs from time to time, while closer ‘(Still) Returning’ is another pretty ambient piece.
