Okraina Records are a neat little label from Brussels. They’re pretty selective in what they put out - averaging about one 10” every six months - and all of their releases come with fantastic artwork by Gwenola Carrere. This latest pressing is of music from a 2012 short film by director Vincent Moon. Calling The New Gods charted the journey of Javanese duo Senyawa from the outskirts of Yogyakarta to the city’s centre. Singer Rully Shabara seems capable of doing a million things with his voice, from yodelling to punk-rap spitting. Wukir Suryadi handles instruments and proves himself an adept accompanist. The pair’s songs are interspersed with the ambient noise of their travels in rice fields, fairs and city squares, and these scene-setting sounds become as much as part of the record as the music.
