The fifth LP for Essaie Pas - and second for DFA Records - sees the duo of Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau come through with six more slabs of dark, brooding technotronica. Any record that claims to use Philip K. Dick’s A Scanner Darkly as a primary source is never going to be laugh-a-minute, but New Path has the Montreal group making some of their darkest stuff yet. The likes of ‘Les Aphides’ and ‘Futur Parle’ are synthwave, darkwave, coldwave and all the other waves bundled into one. What sets Essaie Pas aside from some of their -wave peers is their production chops and attention to detail - the construction of the beat for ‘Complet Brouille’ is impressively dexterous.
