Genres

Originally released in 2012, this LP by the late Susumu Yokota uses Jon Hassell’s guiding principle of ‘Fourth World Music’ to create an album of dense, globalist sonic explorations. Dreamer not only brings together geographically disparate styles - Japanese classical music, Berlin techno, UK rave breaks and Californian New Age ambience to name but four - but also subjects them to a variety of treatments. While tracks like ‘Subconscious Globe’ see traditional club sounds swirling into transcendental cadences, ‘Human Memory’ and ‘Double Spot Image’ spin found sounds and field recordings out into pieces of unearthly beauty. Imagine Brian Eno and John Cale working together in the 2010s, with modern studio techniques at their disposal, and you might have something close to Dreamer.
