Yann Novak’s second LP for Touch (Ipek Gorgun, Fennesz) is formed as a sonata - that’s one idea broken up into four parts. The Future Is A Forward Escape Into The Past sees the Los Angeles composer utilising techniques from drone, concrete, found sound and electroacoustic music to explore the relationship between sound, memory and time. Asking the listener to be still and focus on the present moment in our busy world, Novak’s incrementally shifting soundscapes have a fragile beauty to them. Each movement features a rumbling low drone set by turns to soft organs or a recording of tweeting birds.
