Laurence Pike uses his latest LP to take stock of things. Having banged skins in PVT (formerly Pivot), Triosk and Szun Waves for the best part of two decades, Distant Early Warning sees him turning his attention towards the worlds of downtempo electronica, spiritual jazz and IDM. Recorded in a single day with just a drum kit and a sampler, Distant Early Warning weds the muted electronics of acts like Boards of Canada and early Four Tet with exploratory drum takes. At times this means Pike invokes and air of serene beauty - try opener ‘Life Hacks’ - while tracks like ‘Cloud and Wire’ find him stumbling onto strange new sonic vistas.
