Richard Youngs’ umpteenth LP - it’s at least 140 at this point - is in fact his first for Tim Burgess’s O Genesis imprint (R. Stevie Moore, Keel Her). Youngs was going to use the eleven tracks of Belief as fodder from which to collect major label rejection letters for an art project, but after one listen Burgess snapped them up and set them to wax. It’s easy to see why - the blissy post-shoegaze of Belief’s best offerings are exactly the sort of thing that you imagine gets Burgess going. The likes of ‘Nebulosity’ are properly wyrd, with Youngs’s voice and guitar haunted by the chants, echoes and cries in the background. While the core songwriting principles steer close to Richard Dawson and Daniel O’Sullivan, Belief has Youngs out on his own once again.
