‘Pretoria’, a standout track from John Matthias and Jay Auborn’s 2017 LP Race To Zero, gets the remix treatment here. This EP opens with the original, reminding everyone of the power and energy that it brought to Race To Zero. Equal parts trip-hop, Icelandic sound design and twisted electronica, the track blooms from glitchy beginnings to a sweeping, evocative climax. With plenty of base material to work from, the trio of remixes all take the track down very different sonic paths. While Mogwai’s John Cummings weds the original’s piano to a driving four-on-the-floor, Moon Gang go straight for the jugular on their hard-hitting flip. However, the most bracing offering here is also the most weightless - CUTS drops the track into total darkness, building from an ominous piano loop to a chilly, Blade Runner-esque second section.
