Another week, another great drop from Sheffield’s CPU Recordings. For their latest trick they’ve enlisted the services of French producer Maelstrom (ZONE, Sound Pellegrino) for a collection of one-take jams. Comparing a producer’s output to Aphex Twin is something of a moot point in 2018, but the seven takes here really do bare the influence of Richard D. James. The likes of ‘Letter From M’ and ‘Who Else Is Reading’, with their stuttering modulars and booming Roland drums, could have been lopped off of the end of Syro. Elsewhere the Djedjotronic collaboration ‘Lost Echoes’ combines wistful rave keyboards and muted beats in a manner that recalls Lorenzo Senni.
