Alpha Pup Records (Howie Lee, Daedalus) front the debut LP from Los Angeles duo Penthouse Penthouse. In the orbit of the likes of Mr. Carmack and Jordan Rakei, these California studio wizards have whipped up nine tracks of neo-soul prettiness. They clearly have sturdy chops in the studio, with the pair bringing a warmth and richness to everything on Cruise Control. They use r&b as a jumping-off point from which to explore a plethora of genres, and as such their sound has the same kaleidoscopic quality that characterises the best of Frank Ocean’s work. Taking in yacht rock, future beats, G-funk and that sort of musical theatre-rap thing Chance the Rapper does, Penthouse Penthouse have crafted a nice mellow high.
