Belle And Sebastian have previous experience when it comes to releasing EP triple-threats. They did so in 1997 - the run of Dog On Wheels, Lazy Line Painter Jane and 3.. 6.. 9 Seconds Of Light - and two decades on they’ve given us the three-part How To Solve Our Human Problems series. However, if you struggle to keep up with release schedules then the band have also handily compiled the three EPs as both a vinyl box set and a CD. Musically it’s a real mixed bag - for every bit of classic jangly B & S fare like ‘Sweet Dew Lee’ we get something more out-three. The twee-pop/breakbeat (?!) hybrid of ‘We Were Beautiful’, for example. The overall effect recalls the more experimental offerings of late-90s St Etienne, and the beauty is that Belle And Sebastian’s inherent charm and songwriting chops win out no matter what styles they dabble in.
