The first collaboration between Henry Wu and Earl Jeffers is a perfect fit for the MCDE Recordings label. With releases on Rhythm Section, Eglo and Ten Thousand Yen between them, this is a pair who know their way around a house groove. A-side ‘Projections’ is some prime Mahogani fetishism. Based around a classic-as-they-come staggered drum lick and jazz-inspired chord progression, Wu and Jeffers let loose over the top. Vibraphone, snippets of soul singing and a fat synth line ensure that ‘Projections’ is some serious dancefloor fodder. The flip ‘Hi Life’ does a similar job similarly well, taking the same drum pattern and layering it with the sort of synth stabs that one might find in the work of label boss Motor City Drum Ensemble.
