Yorkshire musicians Adam Martin and Mark Slater present the first release in their Nightports series. Taking recordings made by celebrated pianist (and fellow Yorkshireman) Matthew Bourne, the pair have subsequently manipulated Bourne’s base material to create compositions of surprising range. Though there are of course some pretty keyboard ditties in the vein of Nils Frahm (‘Window’, ‘This Trip’), a combination of Bourne’s varied playing techniques and the producers’ treatment turns out some innovative results. If you didn’t know better, you’d be convinced that a percussionist had been involved in the making of ‘Look Me In The Eye’, while ‘Leave’ features textures and tones more familiar to guitar-led post-rock bands like Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky.
