Some good ol’ fashioned rockin’ fare from the Ben Miller Band here. The group’s second LP with New West Records (Caroline Rose, Drive-By Truckers) is a collection of swampy blues-rock numbers in the noble tradition of ZZ Top, Mountain Sprout et al. Cuts like ‘Akira Kurosawa’ and ‘Big Boy’ make their presence felt with great lumbering beats, washtub bass and plenty of wailing guitar. Elsewhere on Choke Cherry Tree the group show their country side (‘Trapeze’) and even a bit of a chamber-pop sensibility (‘Lighthouse’).
