You can’t really do a Julian Cope reissues series without having Saint Julian in there. Sure enough, Universal have re-vinylised Cope’s 1987 LP for a new generation. His third album after leaving The Teardrop Explodes saw Cope going full pop. Streamlining his songwriting and embracing 80s production techniques, Cope served up a concise LP of power-pop jams. Springsteen, Rick Springfield and Bowie’s 80s work all figure in the sharp-darts, leather-jacket pop hooks here. The proto-Primal Scream stomp of ‘World Shut Your Mouth’ remains Cope’s only top 20 hit to date, while ‘Trampolene’ and ‘Eve’s Volcano’ also did well on the charts.
