Julian Cope
My Nation Underground
UMC / Island
Catalogue Number
Release Date
June 8, 2018

One of the four Julian Cope LPs to be reissued by Universal Music is his 1988 record My Nation Underground, his fourth album as a solo artist. One of the poppiest offerings in his catalogue - ‘Charlotte Anne’ remains one of Cope’s only top 40 hits - My Nation Underground is anchored in a fusion of 60s girl-groups, country balladeering, 80s pop-rock and a little of the post-punk flair left over from his time in The Teardrop Explodes. It’s not dissimilar to Morrissey’s Viva Hate, an album released seventh months prior to My Nation Underground, and it also recalls other luminaries of the 80s leftfield like Prefab Sprout.
