The ever-entertaining Berceuse Heroique welcome in 2018 with this concept-heavy release by Banileau Records boss Benoit B. ‘Japonaiserie’ is a term coined by Vincent Van Gogh to describe an irreverent give-and-take between the Japanese and Western art schools, and Benoit B’s contribution to the field is a playful seven-track. Among others, Benoit B toys with the sounds of City Pop and the Yellow Magic Orchestra to create an EP rich in textural and melodic thrills. At times he attempts to find stillness and tranquility (‘Tokyo Hi Life’, ‘Compassion and Release’), at others we get curious sonic quests with a light sino-Grime flavour (‘Far Distant Star System’, ‘100 Echoes’).
