The Neapolitan sound designer SMHERTZ drops an EP of breaks, grooves and loops. While the sample sets SMHERTZ releases on the Silence+OtherSounds imprint tend toward the experimental and abstract, the one born Giuseppe Caiazzo largely plays it straight for Los Angeles imprint Cold Busted here. Most of the cuts are impeccably rendered slices of funk drumming that will please producers and turntablists alike. Occasionally Caiazzo throws in a sparse bass lick or squelchy 303, but for the most part these are crisp drum tracks. Only on the closing number does he indulge his more exploratory tendencies and creates a piece of dubby electroacousticism.
