Another chirpy offering from Nick Klein here … Lowered Flaming Coffin follows his other portentously-titled records for L.I.E.S., Alter and Unknown Precept. He now returns to Alter with these four Spartan, neurotic pieces. Opener ‘Burning Mattresses’ is a red herring - beginning with a plaintive synth drone, the chiming sounds are soon bent out of shape to become something nerve-wracking. When the beat kicks in for ‘Pena Adobe’, Klein offers us little more than a dead-eyed kick drum drained of emotion and effect. Atop this there are synths that sound like air-raid sirens, and Klein repeats the trick on ‘Smelling The Sheets’. The record closes with the fourteen-minute industrial epic ‘The God In Vodka’, a track that Damien Dubrovnik or Fuck Buttons would be proud of. Extreme, visceral and powerful.
