Having lain dormant for a few years, Paul Rose’s SCB project has been given new life in 2017. Old Media New Society follows last month’s Below The Line EP with another four tracks of dark, intense techno. Some of the traits that have taken Rose’s Scuba project to the top of the deep house game are recontextualised here - jacking hats, for instance, as well as meaty four-to-the-floors. But when he’s in SCB mode, Rose weds these to grainy keys and unnerving bleep-bloop melodies. ‘Test Tubes’, ‘Freedom For The Fifty’ and ‘Oration’ all pack a serious punch, with the latter a particularly unrelenting slab of dark room tackle. Closer ‘Laboratory Conditions’ provides a little breathing space.
