Just from this band’s name and their record’s title, you know that this one’s an oddball. The Drink [********] have made strange, twisted pop for a few years now, but rarely have they sounded as erstwhile as on [********] The Drink. The music of The Drink [********] is stubborn, idiosyncratic, discordant … and highly charming. Despite the fact that many of the songs here feature clattering instrumentals and semi-spoken lyrics as obtuse as their titles - ‘I’m A Zookeeper (Not A Goalkeeper)’, anyone? - one can’t help but be drawn in to The Drink’s weird world. Weird World, incidentally, is also the label putting out this LP, and The Drink [********] can be filed next to WW releases from Richard Dawson and Xenoula.
