Known internationally for the her 1967 hit 'Pata Pata' Miriam Makeba AKA Mama Africa (1932-2008) was a South African singer and prominent civil rights activist whose work campaigning against apartheid caused the South African government to revoke her passport, with Makeba only returning home in 1990 on request of Nelson Mandela following its abolition. Cited as the first artist from Africa to popularise African music, Makeba toured and recorded with artists such as Paul Simon, Harry Belafonte (who in 1966 she won a Grammy for her performance with) and her former husband Hugh Masekela. Pata Pata features the incredible title track 'Pata Pata' alongside the beautifully powerful vocals in 'Yetentu Tizaleny' and the rhythmically stunning 'Jol'inkomo'.
