This is first new release from Heathered Pearls in two years, and the Motor City native has come through with a love letter to his home city. Each track tries to recreate a specific Detroit location in sound, with the selection including odes to techno hubs the Packard Plant and the Mack & Bellevue warehouse, and the record’s sleeve depicts cement taken from each location. Unsurprisingly, the four tracks of Detroit, MI 1997-2001 are made up of hauntological techno - throwbacks that also reframe both real and actual memories of the city’s musical history. Just check how the Belleville Three-type groove of ‘Under The Bridge’ is haunted by a ghostly synth lead in its second half, or how the cavernous production on ‘The Packard Plant’ makes the track sound as if it is being streamed live from the eponymous venue.
