The Porto-born, London-based IVVVO follows releases on the likes of Danse Noire and Opal Tapes with the first drop for new London label NYX Unchained. Prince of Grunge is a torrid, abrasive EP that finds itself afflicted with the memory of rave. In a manner similar to recent releases by Rabit, Lorenzo Senni and Arca, IVVVO’s music here sees club music pulling itself apart to make something altogether stranger. The title track, for instance, has the producer invoking trance, post-punk and Philip Glass’s piano music to disorientating effect. Though nothing here has the beatwork necessary to make it thrive in a club setting, the overall effect will have one re-examining one’s relationship with the dance.
