On this record under his new Younger Rebinds moniker, Benny Rodrigues eschews dancefloor innovation for old-school comfort food. The eight tracks of Retro7 are largely built on the throwback stylings of the Roland 707 drum machine, and the rhythm box’s snappy sound sets the scene nicely for these perky club cuts. There’s a bit of DJ Hell in there, a bit of Fingers Inc., you get the picture. Of course, Rodrigues is someone who knows a thing or two about making rooms move, so most all of Retro7 is primed for mid-set deployment. The EP’s one detour is ‘Snelle Jelle’, a number that eschews the 707 and allows a 303 to take the lead in order to create a heady bleep-bloop soundscape.
