UNKLE member Matthew Puffett yokes together all of the best work from his twenty-plus years in the game here. You can chart the evolution of the Future Beat Alliance sound in the first two songs of this collection. Opener ‘Intruder’, one of Puffett’s earliest releases via Void Records, is a simultaneously raw and elegant slice of Detroit-inspired techno. Immediately following that we get the new ‘Chemical Cloud’, a far more idiosyncratic thing altogether. Synths stutter, whirr and gasp over an unrelenting kick drum, and the altogether more unusual production style works in nice contrast to the immediacy of ‘Intruder’. The rest of the collection takes in Puffett’s big-room trips (‘Cross Dissolve’, ‘Machines Can Help’), glistening computer music (‘Without Words’) and excursions into IDM (‘Head Ways’).
