Sam Underwood began Belatedly in 2014. Intended as a present for his father, he was unable to complete the album before his dad died of lung cancer. Now completed, this LP is a gift to us all. Utilising tuba, droning synths and all sorts of percussion, Belatedly is an album rich in emotional scope. There is the sound of sadness (‘Bauxite’), confusion (‘Khyam’), bittersweet optimism (‘Sillicate’) and so much more, all unpacked in a style that recalls the tender avant-ness of Adult Jazz and Peter Zummo.
