Out-there spiritual jazz from Chicago via London on this new Honest Jons release from the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. The sadly deceased Phil Cohran’s children pay tribute to his musical vision and lay down an astounding eleven tracks filled with intense, experimental trumpeting and cosmic atmospherics. Big tip for any Sun Ra Arkestra fans and even worth a look if you like the noisier side of the Impulse/ECM back catalogue. As the press release points out, the term ‘spiritual jazz’ may be in danger of becoming a tiresome cliché but records like this drive the point back home.
