Saint Etienne dropped their first album in a half-decade earlier in 2017, so it’s no surprise that longtime home Heavenly Recordings have seen fit to sign off on some re-pressings of their best ‘90s work. Originally released in 1998, the band’s fourth LP Good Humor bubbles with the wry wit and leftfield charm that defines Saint Etienne. They lean hard on the Gainsbourg-philia, with the keening organs and splashy drums of tracks like ‘Split Screen’ and ‘Been So Long’ paving the way for the resurgent interest in the chansons that would later characterise records like Beck’s Sea Change. Elsewhere, the band prove that they can still come up with warm indie disco hits like the twinkling ‘Sylvie’.
