Before ‘Ready For The Floor’, before The Two Bears, and definitely before Peter Serafinowicz was directing their music videos, Hot Chip were just a group of mates from South London who made idiosyncratic and charming electro-pop. After self-releasing for a few years, Moshi Moshi picked them up and fronted their debut LP way back in 2004. Coming On Strong didn’t make the splash that The Warning would two years later, but the album nails the group’s aesthetic from the get-go. Few other mid-00s British indie bands would come out with a single as lopsidedly fantastic as ‘Down With Prince’, though the vitriol of the song’s lyric was a match for any of the angry boys with guitars about at the time. It’s a testament to Hot Chip’s chops that, while their contemporaries have fallen by the wayside, their music endures.
