A standout track from Anna Meredith’s 2016 Moshi Moshi LP Varmints as well as being a fan favourite ever since it first surfaced in 2012, ‘Nautilus’ now comes released on vinyl with an etched B-side. The track is as thrilling as a stand-alone as when it kicks off Varmints. Beginning with either horns or synths that sound like horns, the piece’s fanfares and skipping scales slide in and out of each other in a manner that is simultaneously bracing and disorientating. Backing up ‘Nautilus’ is ‘Miranda’, a rare nugget that originally surfaced in 2014. It’s another piece of quixotic, playful and cinematic electronic composition, one where a wheezing bassline bounces around a steady beat.
