Birds and the BEE9 (pronounced … bees? bean? benign?) might be the first high-profile drop from this Australia-via-Zambia rapper, but Sampa Tembo has been around the block a few times now. A steady string of releases over the past few years means that her Big Dada debut emerges fully-formed and confident. Channelling Erykah Badu, Noname Gypsy and Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, the thirteen tracks of this tape overflow with melody, rhymes, ideas and spirit. Songs like ‘Bye River’ and ‘Inner Voice’ showcase terrific ambition as well as providing tight bars to dwell on long after the track is finished.
