Born out of a Parisian record shop, Souffle Continu have been doing a good line in avant-garde reissues for a few years now. Their latest release is a 1973 record by the Free Jazz Workshop (later the Workshop De Lyon, a group who have also had some of their LPs put out by Souffle Continu). Across the five tracks of Free Jazz Workshop, the group display tremendous invention while still adhering to the fundamentals of Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor et al. The title track is a tremendous drunken slope, while ‘Sphinx’ is a jazz drumming tour de force.
