The Radiohead drummer continues his fine run of solo LPs with this latest album. The music here is the soundtrack to the film Let Me Go, an adaptation of the memoir of an Austrian child whose mother left the family to work in Auschwitz-Birkenau during World War II. As befits the turbulent subject matter, Selway provides a score pregnant with emotion. Lilting strings are a feature of the record, from the mournful ‘Helga’s Theme’ to cautiously hopeful closer ‘Mutti (Let Me Go)’. Selway turns balladeer on ‘Let Me Go’, a piano-based torch song that has shades of Rufus Wainwright to it. We find him back behind the kit on ‘Walk’, and his typically expressive drumming provides a fine foil for collaborator Lou Rhodes’s plaintive, Beth Gibbons-aping vocal.
