The Numero Group’s quest to unearth the best and rarest nuggets of American pop culture has led them to this album of post-Mayfield soul. In 1971 Pastor Thomas Lee Barrett was 27 and running an after-school programme at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chicago. Bringing the church’s choir together with musicians like Chess Records stalwart Gene Barge, he recorded and self-released this rapturous LP. ‘Nobody Knows’ has been used on tracks by DJ Khaled, T.I. and Vic Mensa. Now re-pressed for the first time in years.
