The envelope-pushers at Knives (Kuedo, J.G. Biberkopf) present this bracing release from Belgium’s Obsequies. Each of the six tracks - actually, better call them pieces - of Organn career between light and shade, silence and noise, clarity and obscuration. There is real sonic drama to ‘Asthme’ - the helter-skelter sample work belies the influence of music concrete and electroacoustics, while the rhythmic thrust of the piece and occasional spurts of piano hark to the likes of Brian Eno and Ziur in equal measure. Though a difficult listen, Organn is best summed up by the title of its delightful, spectral closer - ‘But Beautiful…’
