Juan Atkins’s 1985 single under the Model 500 moniker gets a souped-up reissue via his own Metroplex Records imprint. ‘No UFOs’ still sounds as groundbreaking as when it first hit the floors of the Motor City all those years ago. More unhinged than the average Detroit techno cut, ‘No UFOs’ is a delirious mess of bass, chants, kicks and cowbell that clatters along in a manner that recalls everyone from The Tom Tom Club to New Order. This new pressing features remixes from Moodymann and Luciano, with the former particularly interesting for the direct collision between the Mahogani Music sound and Atkins’s helter-skelter original.
