An aural representation of the mythical empire of El Dorado, X.Y.R.’s EP is constructed using an interesting combination of Soviet era synthesisers not often found in contemporary production. Vladimir Karpov (X.Y.R.) layers the Formanta era keytar and Alisa 1387 against wooden flute and percussion, manipulating the impression with pedal effects and atmospheric field recordings. Created in Karpov’s bedroom and villa in St. Petersburg and Tarkhovka respectively in 2014, 12th Isle now reissue the Russian artist’s work in a limited edition LP housed in screen printed sleeve. For those interested in the work of Popol Vuh, Karpov’s EP also operates as an interesting meditation on the output of the German avant-garde collective.
