Another nice, perky release from Ultramajic. Electro, hip-house, vogue and acid all combine to pleasing effect across Michael E’s Retrospective. Most of the pieces here are helmed by 303s and 808s, though they have all been recorded with a dryness that makes the grooves more stiff-necked than most of their contemporaries. There is a pleasingly minimal, no-BS vibe to cuts like ‘Give Me Vision’ and ‘Child of God’. ‘Give Me (The Beat)’ and ‘Beat on the Drums’ contain sing-song chants that could have been nicked from an ESG LP.
