Following a contribution of two tracks to Hyperdub’s Next Life compilation, Teklife affiliate DJ Tre drops his first EP as a lead artist on the legendary label. The Underdogg is a selection of nervy, jittery footwork, but not in the way one might traditionally expect. Rather than working with fidgety, helter-skelter drum tracks, Tre largely conjures feelings of tension by spinning samples out over beats more rooted in juke and ghetto house. See how ‘It’s House Hybrid’ and ‘Tha Rhodes Jam!’ squeeze every last bit of juice out of their loops. Pretty much everything also comes with a weighty low-end, and footwork aficionados will nod approvingly to the triple-time ‘A Hammond Jam’.
